The Stockade Bed & Breakfast

INNformation

History of The Stockade

Stockade Front GateThe Stockade, located on historic Highland Road near LSU and downtown Baton Rouge, is a large Spanish-style hacienda with six comfortable guestrooms. Once a Civil War stockade, the bed and breakfast is named after its 19th century military origin and is listed on the National Registration of Historical Places as an archeological site. A guarded entrance at the road greets guests as they enter the property and serves as a reminder of The Stockade’s interesting past.

Highland Stockade encompasses approximately 30 acres of wooded land part of which is home to the original Stockade Cemetery. The bed and breakfast is situated upon a high bluff descending into low land that was once the riverbed of Ole Man River, the Mississippi . It is this geological contrast from which the name Highland Road is derived.

INNtroduction

“The Stockade's rooms are adorned with luxurious antique furniture and plenty of Louisiana art, making your stay a true memory of the rich Louisiana heritage and lifestyle. This is one place that is hard to beat!”
~ Arthur & Peggy - Cumming, Georgia
Originally built as home to a family of six adventurous children, The Stockade was once part of a large farm. In 1994 Janice DeLerno, owner and innkeeper, opened it as a bed and breakfast. A native of New Orleans, Janice studied Fine Arts at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge and decided to make the city her home.

The hospitality business is a natural fit for Janice’s interests in travel, art, music, dance and cuisine. And, her gallery and custom frame shop nearby allows Janice not only to indulge in her love of art but also to add original artwork throughout The Stockade. Each guestroom and the common areas contain bright arrays of unique pieces by both locally and regionally renowned artists.

The displays of art feature the work of such artists as Don Wright, Bill Stracener, Charlie Smith, George Ufford, Henry Watson and Patty Peterson. More information on the artwork and artists can be found at Frameworks Gallery, 120 Staring Lane, Baton Rouge: 225-769-0582.

Each guestroom has a private bath and is handsomely decorated in a different décor of antique furniture and lovely appointments. The house is equipped with Wireless Internet Access. Other guestroom amenities include color televisions with VCR’s, phones, mini-refrigerators, coffee pots, hairdryers, irons and ironing boards. Hot breakfast is served from 7-9 a.m. A continental self-serve breakfast is available at all times. Rates start at $135.00 per night; weekly and corporate rates are available.

“What can I say about your biscuits except that they were so fluffy I used one as a pillow.”
